Wash Regularly and Don’t Let Laundry Sit
One of the easiest ways to prevent musty smells is to wash clothes promptly. Leaving damp laundry in the hamper or the washing machine creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mildew, which cause unpleasant odors. Try to wash your laundry within a day or two of wearing, and never leave wet clothes sitting for too long.
Use the Right Amount of Detergent
More detergent doesn’t always mean cleaner or fresher-smelling laundry. Using too much can actually leave residue behind, trapping smells in your clothes. Follow the instructions on your detergent bottle and avoid overloading the machine so that water and soap can circulate properly.
Add Natural Fresheners
Simple natural additives like white vinegar, baking soda, or even a few drops of essential oils can make a huge difference. Vinegar helps neutralize odors and softens fabrics, while baking soda boosts freshness. Essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus leave a gentle, clean scent.
Dry Clothes Completely
Dampness is the enemy of freshness. Always dry your clothes thoroughly—whether in a dryer or on a line. If air-drying indoors, ensure there’s enough ventilation to prevent mildew from forming. For an extra touch, pop a dryer sheet into the dryer or add wool dryer balls with a drop of essential oil.
Store Laundry Properly
Fresh laundry can quickly lose its scent if stored poorly. Make sure your closet or drawers are clean, dry, and free from excess moisture. You can add sachets of dried lavender, cedar blocks, or small bags of baking soda to absorb odors and keep your clothes smelling good for longer.
Refresh Between Washes
Sometimes clothes need a little boost before their next wash. A fabric spray, homemade spritz of water with a few drops of essential oil, or even a quick 10-minute tumble in the dryer can revive freshness.
